Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Eye Protection:

Safety glasses with side shields or safety goggles are mandatory when conducting operations that pose a risk of eye injury, such as splashes, splatters, particles, or projectiles. The PIT provides safety glasses but encourages you to bring your own. Safety glasses are available free of charge from LS&EH.

Footwear:

Open toe shoes or sandals are strictly prohibited in all PIT offices and work areas. The minimum acceptable footwear should fully cover your foot. When operating heavy equipment such as a lathe, mill, drill press, or shop saws, safety steel toe shoes are mandatory.

Clothing and Accessories:

Avoid wearing neckties, loose clothing, jewelry, gloves, or any other items or accessories that can potentially get caught in moving or rotating equipment. Additionally, individuals with long hair must tie it back or cover it to prevent contact with moving machinery.

Hearing Protection:

In loud environments, use appropriate hearing protection. Disposable earplugs are conveniently available from a dispenser mounted by the entrance to the heavy machinery room.

Gloves:

When handling hot objects, glass, sharp-edged items, or chemicals, wear gloves that are suitable for the specific task or material being handled.
