The Dover Quartet has established itself as one of the most distinguished chamber ensembles of its generation, praised by BBC Music Magazine as among the greatest string quartets of the past century. Described as “the next Guarneri Quartet” by the Chicago Tribune and “the young American string quartet of the moment” by The New Yorker, the ensemble rose to international prominence in 2013 following an extraordinary sweep of all prizes at the Banff International String Quartet Competition. This decisive victory marked the beginning of a remarkable ascent, positioning the Dover Quartet among the most in-demand ensembles on the global stage.
Rooted in the legacy of the great quartets of the past, the ensemble draws artistic inspiration from the Guarneri, Cleveland, and Vermeer Quartets. Its members trained at Curtis and Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music under renowned mentors including Shmuel Ashkenasi, Arnold Steinhardt, and Michael Tree. Formed at Curtis in 2008, the quartet takes its name from Dover Beach by fellow Curtis alumnus Samuel Barber.
