Hours, Access & Library Policies
The Rita & Frits Markus Library is located in Welch Hall.
Access is limited to:
Rockefeller University (faculty and non-faculty)
- With proper RU I.D., 24 hours a day / 7 days a week.
Guest Visitors
Markus Library welcomes visitors who have access to the campus as determined by security, including guest visitors who do not have a Rockefeller University ID. This includes, but is not limited to, family and friends of Rockefeller University community members, guests of researchers and employees, visiting lecturers and speakers, and visitors from our Four Corners library partner institutions.
Guest visitors are welcome to visit Markus Library during regular hours when the main entrance is open, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
General guest visitors may:
- Visit and use the 2nd Floor Main Reading Room and Library Café Lounge
- View our exhibits and sculptures
- Browse our book collection
Guest visitors may not use library resources or reservable study spaces (Room 202, 2nd Floor Main Reading Room and Room A5 on Level A), which are solely for Rockefeller University students, researchers, faculty, and employees.
Four Corners Library Affiliation
Markus Library is part of the Four Corners Library Affiliation with Weill Cornell Medicine, Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and Hospital for Special Surgery.
Visitors from these affiliated institutions who present a valid institutional ID are eligible for additional library privileges:
- Library access: Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
- Library spaces: Access to the 2nd Floor Main Reading Room and Library Café Lounge. We reserve the right to limit access to the Library if space is needed by Rockefeller University employees.
- Reservable Study space: Access to reservable study spaces (Room 202, 2nd Floor Main Reading Room and Room A5 on Level A) when they are not being used by Rockefeller University users. This access is intended for occasional visits and does not permit regular or repeated use of Markus Library reservable study spaces.
- Book borrowing: Granted as requested
We ask all guest visitors to be respectful of our students, researchers, faculty, and employees, and follow the library’s rules. Please note that Rockefeller University security team will walk around occasionally for campus safety purposes. Also, library staff may ask for your ID.

Library Policies and Guidelines
In order to preserve the historic building and ensure optimal use of our resources by all, we ask our patrons to show consideration to other users and to observe the following basic guidelines while visiting our Library:
- Patrons must use their own ID card to enter the Library. RU ID card holders may not swipe in their guests to enter after hours or on weekends.
- Checking out materials requires a barcode issued by the library. Please contact the library or stop by the circulation desk to receive your barcode. Borrowing privileges for the users from our affiliated libraries vary widely. Please contact the library for your eligibility and instructions.
- No smoking is allowed in the Library. Eating is allowed in a designated area only. Eating food is prohibited in the Main Reading Room on the 2nd floor. Please bring drinks in a container with a cap to minimize spilling.
- Please do not rearrange our furniture, including chairs.
- Please observe common library standards and practices with regard to noise and behavior. The Main Reading Room on the 2nd floor is a quiet area. Please keep your conversation to minimum.
