John J. Harrigan Promoted to Vice President for Finance
The Rockefeller University has promoted John J. Harrigan, C.P.A., associate treasurer and controller, to vice president for finance and controller. Harrigan also serves as the chief financial officer of The Rockefeller University Hospital, a clinical research center, and as controller of the Rockefeller Archive Center.
In his new position, Harrigan has responsibility for preparing the university’s annual budget and financial plans, in addition to supervising the institution’s financial reporting and accounting policies and procedures. He also manages the university’s investment and sponsored programs offices.
Harrigan earned a bachelor of business administration degree in accounting from Iona College in 1961 and completed the curriculum for a master’s degree in controllership accounting from St. John’s University in 1963. He has been certified as a public accountant in New York since 1967.
Harrigan served as a professional practice audit manager for U.S. not-for-profit organizations at KPMG Peat Marwick, an international auditing and consulting firm from 1975 to 1981. He then became associate controller of Columbia University, prior to joining Rockefeller in 1982. He also served as a lecturer in accounting at St. John’s University Graduate School of Business Administration.
Harrigan is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants, the New York State Society of Certified Public Accountants (NYSSCPA) and the National Association of College and Business Officers (NACBO). He chaired the NACBO committee responsible for writing the organization’s publication, The NACBO Financial Accounting and Reporting Manual for Higher Education, and served on the editorial board of the NACBO magazine, Business Officer. He served as a liaison with the U.S. Department of Education in the development of the Audit Guide for All Federal Student Financial Aid Programs and as liaison for the federal Internal Revenue Service for the development of tax reporting guidelines for not-for-profit organizations.
