Movie series debuts on campus

The big screen has come to campus with the launch of a new film series. Held once a month on a Friday night through the end of the academic year, the series debuted on February 13 with The Big Lebowski and continues with The Birdcage (March 13), Slumdog Millionaire (April 24), and Night at the Museum (May 15). All movies are screened at 7 p.m. in Carson Family Auditorium. Free popcorn and drinks are on hand.

The series is curated by Jeff Hennefeld, a senior video production specialist in Information Technology, and funded by a microgrant from the Office of University Life and Community Engagement.

Hennefeld was inspired to develop the film series after recalling how much he enjoyed attending similar events in college, such as a series of Billy Wilder films. “Putting together this series just felt like something I could offer as a perk for folks—especially students—who live on campus or nearby,” he said.

It’s not the first time there’s been a film series on campus: Human Resources held an outdoor movie series in summer 2014, for example, and back in the fall of 1990, there were two series, one held at lunchtime and another on Saturday nights in Caspary. (Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets was one of the flicks.) Many others have come and gone over the years.

Hennefeld would like to turn this into an ongoing effort. “I’m very excited to curate another program on campus or even create a film festival. I have big ideas and big visions.”
