Maria Trifas (she/her) is a fourth year MD-PhD student at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. She was born in Romania, moved to the US when she was young and grew up in Alabama. Maria graduated in 2021 from Columbia University with a degree in biochemistry. She then worked for one year as a technician in her undergraduate lab, the Yan lab at Columbia University Medical Center before starting her MD-PhD program. She completed her preclinical and clerkship years of medical school as well as Step 1 and Step 2 USMLE licensing exams before starting her graduate work in Teresa Davoli's lab in the Institute for Systems Genetics. Her research focuses on aneuploidy and chromosomal alterations in cancer, and her thesis project focuses on modeling and understanding Chromosome 7 loss in acute myeloid leukemia. Outside of the lab, Maria is also a member of the MD-PhD Student Organizing Committee and the Student Wellness Committee. She also enjoys working in science outreach to encourage diversity in science.

Douglas Shea (he/they) is a 5th year MD/PhD student at NYU Grossman School of Medicine. Doug graduated from Brown University in 2019 with honors in biochemistry and molecular biology. He then spent two years at the Broad Institute working as a research associate in the lab of Dr. Viktor Adalsteinsson developing methods for more sensitive cancer detection with liquid biopsies. After the completion of three years of medical school, Doug is currently a second year PhD candidate in Dr. Mark Yarmarkovich's lab where he is focused on engineering ways to increase the scale of tumor antigen detection and targeting with CAR T cell immunotherapy. Outside of academics, Doug is one of the chairs of the Student Queer Alliance and the Queer Mentorship and Advising Program, a Narrative Medicine peer facilitator, and a member of the Gold Humanism Honors society.

Nicolás DeRuiter (he/him) is a third-year MD-PhD student at the Tri-Institutional MD-PhD Program. He earned a BS Intensive in Literature and Biology at Yale studying the sequence determinants of ALS/FTD pathogenesis with Junjie Guo, followed by postbaccalaureate research in neurodegeneration and cell death with Marc Tessier-Lavigne at Stanford. He recently completed the first phase of MD training at Weill Cornell and is currently a first-year PhD student at Rockefeller with Seth Darst and Liz Campbell investigating mechanisms of viral replication. His interests include collectivistic public health, ultra-endurance adventure by bike and by foot, and ridding the world of pandemics and genocide.

Masuda Begum (she/her) is a second year MD student at WCMC. Prior to medical school, Masuda worked at Shixin Liu’s lab at Rockefeller University. She is passionate about mentorship and participates in several mentorship programs with her undergrad Hunter College. In her free time, Masuda likes to sew dresses and explore new crafts.
