Li Yu received his Ph.D. from Peking University, conducted postdoctoral training with Michael J. Lenardo at NIH, and joined the School of Life Sciences at Tsinghua University as a professor in 2008. He discovered autophagic lysosome reformation (ALR), the terminal step of autophagy, and has worked extensively on other aspects of the autophagy pathway. In 2012, his group discovered the migrasome, a novel organelle involved in cell–cell communication during cell migration. Currently, Li Yu's laboratory is focused on elucidating the mechanisms underlying migrasome formation and its pathophysiological roles.
