The Glasgow-based Maxwell String Quartet is regarded as one of the world’s most exciting and unique young quartets. The New York Times praised the quartet’s “charisma and sense of adventure,” while The New Yorker acclaimed their “effervescent sound and buoyant energy.” Known for their electrifying performances of standard repertoire, Scottish folk music, and contemporary works by such composers as Anna Meredith and James MacMillan, the Quartet consists of friends Colin Scobie (violin), George Smith (violin), Elliott Perks (viola), and Duncan Strachan (cello). Maxwell has performed at London’s Wigmore Hall, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, the BBC Proms, and festivals across the world. Winner of both the First Prize and Audience Prize at the 2017 Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition, the ensemble was honored to have been invited by the Metropolitan Museum to perform at a 50-year anniversary celebration of the Guarneri Quartet.
