Books - Borrowing, Renewing, Requesting & Returning

To locate books, use The Markus Library Primo Search. Primo Search is our new library system and discovery tool that replaces the former library catalog. It is a one-stop place to search for library print, electronic, and digital materials and to discover and access journal articles, e-books, databases, and more.

Borrowing Books:

  • Borrowing books from The Markus Library is limited to Faculty and Students of the Rockefeller University, Weill Cornell Medical College Library, and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center Medical Library who hold a valid I.D. Card.

  • Books may be checked out with assistance from the library staff or by using one of the two Self-Checkout Stations located on the Second Floor or Level B.

  • Most books are circulated for 4 weeks. Borrowing period varies depending on material borrowed and a Patron’s home library.

  • Some highly circulated books, such as recreational reading and textbooks, may be limited to a 1-week checkout period.

Renewing Books

  • You may renew books by calling ext.8904 or by sending an email to the Library Services Desk. It is also possible to renew books online by signing in with your RUNet account and access “MY LIBRARY CARD” in Primo Search or at either one of the Self-Checkout Stations. You will need your library barcode, located on the back of your I.D. card to do this. Rockefeller patrons: phone x8904 to get a barcode.

  • Renewing books online or at either Self-Checkout Station can only be done before their due date. Once books are overdue, you will need to call or send an e-mail message to the library staff.

  • Books that have been borrowed may be renewed up to 2 times for 1-2 weeks per renewal period, depending on the type of book. The library staff may allow additional renewals at their discretion.

Requesting, Reserving, and/or Placing a Hold on a Book

  • Library books may be reserved using the Primo Search.

  • Search for a book and pull up the record.

  • At the top of the screen, select the “Request” button.

  • Enter your name and barcode (to obtain your barcode, email: libcirc@rockefeller.edu).

  • A librarian will search for the book, retrieve it and place it on hold at the Library Services Desk, located on the Second Floor of Welch Hall.

  • You will receive an email alert notifying you that the book is ready for pickup.
  • Books that are currently checked out to other patrons will have a longer wait time.
  • If the book cannot be located, a librarian will request it from another library.

Returning Books

  • Books may be returned at the Library on the Second Floor of Welch Hall or by using the book deposit box located in:
  • Founders Hall Lobby

Overdue and Missing Book Policy

  • If you receive a second overdue notice you will be blocked from borrowing books. You will also be blocked from using the self-checkout stations.

  • It is your responsibility to return books on time and when requested, regardless of whether or not you have received an overdue notice.

  • If the book is lost, you will be asked to either replace the book or you will be invoiced for the cost of replacing the book.
  • All questions regarding overdue and/or missing books should be directed to the library from which the books were borrowed.
