Drawing on almost 15 years of longitudinal data from RockEDU’s high school and undergraduate programs, this talk will trace student pathways from early exposure to advanced research training and professional attainment. By examining who stays, who advances, and under what conditions, it identifies the layered mentorship, paid research access, iterative skills development, and cross-institutional partnerships that support sustained participation in STEM. Persistence is framed not as individual perseverance, but as the outcome of intentional, vertically integrated educational infrastructure.

Jeanne Garbarino is Executive Director of RockEDU, where she leads strategy, partnerships, and program development across a portfolio of science outreach, community engagement, and research education initiatives. Her work centers on expanding access to meaningful scientific experiences and supporting the educators and scientists who make those experiences possible. She also serves as Lab Lead for the Civic Science Fellows Program, national fellowship supporting leaders who strengthen the relationship between science and society. Across both roles, she focuses on building durable systems that strengthen public trust and position science as a shared civic endeavor. Jeanne earned her PhD in metabolic biology from Columbia University and completed her postdoctoral training at The Rockefeller University.
