Over the last few decades, new mathematical techniques have played an important role in a variety of biomedical and biophysical imaging modalities. Following a brief survey of the field, this talk will focus on recent progress in nonlinear optimization that is bringing large-scale problems in acoustic scattering and cryo-electron microscopy within practical reach.
