Cancer is driven by mutation. Using massively parallel sequencing technology, scientists can now sequence the entire genome of cancer samples, allowing the generation of comprehensive catalogues of somatic mutations of all classes. Bespoke algorithms have been developed to identify somatically acquired point mutations, copy number changes and genomic rearrangements, which require extensive validation by confirmatory testing. The findings from Dr. Campbell and his colleagues' initial work on genomes illustrate the potential for next-generation sequencing to provide unprecedented insights into mutational processes, cellular repair pathways and gene networks associated with cancer development. Dr. Campbell will also review possible applications of these technologies in a diagnostic and clinical setting, and the potential routes for translation.

Dr. Campbell completed specialist training in hematology in 2002 and subsequently earned a Ph.D. at the University of Cambridge in the molecular pathogenesis and clinical management of myeloproliferative disorders. Since 2007 he has been employed at the Cancer Genome Project at the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute and in 2010 he was given a senior clinical fellowship. Also in 2010, Dr. Campbell was awarded the CR-UK Future Leaders in Cancer Research Prize.

His major interest is cancer genomics, and his recent research has been concentrated on the implementation of next generation sequencing technologies for the detection of somatically acquired genetic variants in tumor samples. One major aspiration is to develop translational applications of high-throughput genomic screening for the care of patients with cancer.
