Friday Lecture Series
Speaker(s)
Thomas Jessell, Ph.D., Claire Tow Professor, department of neuroscience, department of biochemistry and molecular biophysics, Columbia University Medical Center; investigator, Howard Hughes Medical Institute
Speaker bio(s)

Dr. Jessell’s research examines the strategies and mechanisms that control the assembly and function of circuits for mammalian motor control. His work has defined how diverse neuronal subtypes assemble into motor circuits and how the precision and logic of network wiring contributes to refined motor skills. His most recent studies focus on circuits that control two forms of limb motor behavior: locomotion and skilled reaching. Dr. Jessell will describe how knowledge of neuronal subtypes permits precise genetic methods for monitoring and manipulating the activity of selected classes of spinal neurons, and leads to insight into the design of systems engaged in the planning and execution of skilled movement.

Dr. Jessell received his Ph.D. in neuropharmacology from Cambridge University in 1977. He was a postdoc at Tokyo Medical and Dental University in Japan and at Harvard Medical School in Boston, where he a member of Gerald Fischbach's laboratory. He had a faculty appointment at Harvard Medical School before joining Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1985. He has also been an HHMI investigator since 1985. He has been the recipient of numerous awards including the Gruber Foundation Prize, the Vilcek Foundation Prize, the Scolnick Prize, the Canada Gairdner International Award, the Kavli Prize in Neuroscience, the Pasarow Foundation Award, and the New York City Mayor's Award for Excellence in Science and Technology. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the National Academy of Medicine.
