Dr. Pritchard will describe work that his lab has done in two areas relating to human genetic variation. He will describe their statistical work on using genetic data to study human population structure, history and adaptation. He will also discuss the lab's functional work on understanding the molecular mechanisms by which genetic variation impacts gene regulation. This class of variation seems to be a major contributor to complex traits and, likely, to evolutionary change.
Dr. Pritchard earned his Ph.D. from Stanford University in 1998 under the advisement of Marcus Feldman. He was then a postdoctoral fellow in statistics at the University of Oxford, advised by Peter Donnelly, until 2001. He was hired to the faculty of The University of Chicago and became full professor in 2006. He has been an investigator at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 2008. Dr. Pritchard has been the recipient of a number of grants and awards, including an Alfred P. Sloan fellowship and the Edward Novitski Prize from the Genetics Society of America. He was chosen for the endowed James D. Watson Chair of Molecular Evolution at University of Chicago and in 2008 was named by Discover magazine as one of the "20 Best Brains Under 40."
