Alessio Bax, piano
Alessio Bax is known for his lyrical playing, insightful interpretations and impressive facility at the piano. Since taking first prizes at the Leeds International Pianoforte Competition and the Hamamatsu International Piano Competition in Japan, Bax has won audiences across the globe. He has appeared as soloist with over 90 orchestras, including the London and Royal Philharmonic orchestras, Dallas and Houston symphonies and the St. Petersburg Philharmonic.
In October Bax released “Alessio Bax Plays Brahms” on the Signum Records label, and his previous album, “Rachmaninov: Preludes and Melodies,” was named a Critics’ Choice 2011 by American Record Guide. This past summer, he performed and recorded Mozart’s Piano Concertos K. 491 and K. 595 with the Southbank Sinfonia in London for release in 2013. Festival appearances have included London’s International Piano Series, Verbier in Switzerland and the Ruhr Klavier festival, Beethovenfest and Schloss Elmau in Germany.
Bax graduated with top honors from the conservatory of his hometown in Bari, Italy, at age 14 and after further studies in Europe moved to the United States in 1994. A Steinway artist, he resides in New York City with his wife and frequent duo partner, pianist Lucille Chung. In 2009 he was awarded an Avery Fisher Career Grant, one of the most prestigious prizes in classical music.
