Dr. Zoghbi’s interest is in understanding healthy brain development as well as what goes awry in specific neurological conditions. She has published seminal work on the molecular basis of Rett syndrome and on late-onset neurodegenerative diseases.Dr. Zoghbi received her M.D. from Meharry Medical College and did her residency in pediatrics at Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children's Hospital. She completed a fellowship in neurology and pediatric neurology, as well as postdoctoral work, at Baylor College of Medicine. Dr. Zoghbi joined the faculty at Baylor in 1988 and was promoted to professor in 1994. She became an investigator with the Howard Hughes Medical Institute in 1996, and director of the Jan and Dan Duncan Neurological Research Institute at Texas Children's Hospital in 2010. Dr. Zoghbi is a member of several professional organizations, including the McKnight Foundation Neuroscience Board, and is a senior editor for the newly founded journal eLife. Among Dr. Zoghbi's honors are the E. Mead Johnson Award from Society of Pediatric Research, the IPSEN prize in neuronal plasticity, the Bristol Myers-Squibb Neuroscience Distinguished Achievement Award, the Vilcek prize, the Gruber prize in Neuroscience and most recently the Dickson Prize in Medicine and the Pearl Meister Greengard prize. In 2000 she was elected to the Institute of Medicine, and in 2004 she was elected to the National Academy of Sciences.
