The Rockefeller University mourns the loss of our esteemed colleague A. James “Jim” Hudspeth, who passed away on August 16, 2025. Jim is responsible for much of what we know about the sense of hearing, based on his studies of the structure, mechanics, and responsiveness of the ear’s sensory receptors, called “hair cells.” His research on these auditory receptors has explained how we are able to discriminate an astounding range of sound frequencies, how the sensitivity of hearing depends upon sound amplification by the sensory apparatus of the inner ear, and how damage to hair cells leads to hearing deficits. In recent years, his work evolved to suggest exciting possibilities for regenerative therapies to alleviate hearing impairments and other disorders in which irreplaceable cells are lost.

Jim was a brilliant investigator, generous collaborator, and dedicated mentor, also known for his quick wit. His deep intellect, his integrity, and his unwavering commitment to basic research will be greatly missed by the entire Rockefeller community. Learn more about Jim Hudspeth’s life and career.

The orderliness of nature and the relationship between things is limitlessly beautiful.
~ A. James Hudspeth

Recognizing the importance of early research experience to his career, Jim strived to support the development of younger scientists. The Hudspeth family has asked that donations be directed to the Hudspeth Fund for Science Outreach at The Rockefeller University to honor his legacy as an extraordinary scientist whose passion for investigation was matched by his gift for sharing the wonders of science with young people. Individuals who wish to contribute to the Hudspeth Fund for Science Outreach may do so online.
