Recently, it has become apparent that genome evolution can occur in a saltatory manner, with catastrophic cell division errors causing bursts of genome rearrangement. Dr. Pellman will discuss his lab’s recent progress in understanding one such catastrophic event called chromothripsis. Chromothripsis is a newly discovered mutational process with a characteristic pattern of chromosomal rearrangement occurring on only a few chromosomes. It is now known to be common in cancer, accounting for a large fraction of the genomic rearrangements in many tumors. It also occurs in a variety of other contexts, including during interspecies hybridization in plants. The mechanisms generating chromothripsis involve the functional collapse of the nuclear envelope followed by chromosomal fragmentation. New data explaining these phenomena will be presented.

Dr. Pellman received his undergraduate and medical degrees from the University of Chicago. During medical school, he trained with Dr. Hidesaburo Hanafusa at The Rockefeller University. His internship, residency, and fellowship in pediatric oncology were at Boston Children’s Hospital and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute. His postdoctoral fellowship was with Dr. Gerald Fink at the Whitehead Institute and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Dr. Pellman has received a Damon Runyon Scholar Award, a Stohlman Scholar Award from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of America, an E. Mead Johnson Award, and an NIH MERIT Award. He has been elected to the Association of American Physicians and is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
