Human development depends on not only the linear genome sequence that embeds millions of cis regulatory elements, but also the three-dimensional (3-D) chromatin architecture that orchestrates the interplay between cis regulatory elements and their target genes. Compared with our knowledge of the cis regulatory sequences, the understanding of the 3-D genome organization in humans is still incomplete. Recent advances in technologies to map the 3-D genome architecture have greatly accelerated the pace of discovery. In this lecture, Dr. Ren will describe emerging principles of chromatin organization in human cells, discuss the dynamics of chromatin conformation during development and cellular differentiation, and highlight roles for chromatin organization in gene regulation during development and in disease.
Dr. Ren is a world leader in the study of genome organization and epigenomics. He has developed transformative tools and concepts that revolutionized the global analysis of gene regulation. His seminal discovery of the topological domains has laid the foundation for understanding 3-D genome architecture.
Dr. Ren received his B.S. in biophysics in 1991 from the University of Science and Technology of China and his Ph.D. in biochemistry in 1998 from Harvard University, where he was in Dr. Tom Maniatis’s laboratory. He completed postdoctoral work in the laboratory of Dr. Richard A. Young at the Whitehead Institute for Biomedical Research. He is currently a member of the Ludwig Institute for Cancer Research, professor of cellular and molecular medicine at the University of California, San Diego, and director of the UCSD Center for Epigenomics. Among other honors, Dr. Ren has received the Charlotte Geyer Foundation Award in 2004, the Distinguished Young Investigator Award from the Chinese Biological Investigators Society in 2007, and the Chen Award for Distinguished Academic Achievement in Human Genetic and Genomic Research in 2016. He is a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science.
