The Pels Family Center provides infrastructure and training for interdisciplinary studies of important biological and medical problems, using complementary tools from chemistry, physics and the computational sciences. Under the direction of Richard M. and Isabel P. Furlaud Professor Thomas P. Sakmar, M.D., center members have established a synchrotron beamline for X-ray protein crystallography, high-speed computing facilities and a biophysical tools teaching program. Research interests of the members include chromosomal DNA replication, nuclear transport, messenger RNA transcription, RNA processing, protein translation, signal transduction, ion channel structure and function, protein folding, peptide/protein chemistry, chemical biology, and computation and structural genomics.
