LAB Jumpstart FAQs

Is there a minimum age one must be or school grade level to attend?

You must be 16 years old before the beginning of the program in order to attend — no exceptions to this rule (please see University Policy: Guidelines for Mentoring a Minor in the Laboratory). This is irrespective of grade — so a sophomore may apply if she or he will be 16 years old by the program’s start date (March 6, 2018).

Can I apply if I have not been nominated by a teacher or community leader?

No. Only students who have been nominated by their teacher or community leader will be invited to apply to LAB Jumpstart. Teachers or community leaders have no nomination limit, but a maximum of 4 students per school will be selected.

Do I have to interview to be accepted into the program?

Yes. Students who submit strong applications will be asked to come to Rockefeller for an interview with LAB Jumpstart facilitators.

Is there a waitlist?

Yes, we will keep a short waitlist. Should a space open up, we will notify the waitlisted students as soon as possible. Waitlisted students will be notified of any openings by the last week of February, 2018.

Is there an application fee?

No, there are no costs to apply. However, students may not apply if they have not been nominated by a teacher or community leader.

When does the program begin/end?

The 2018 LAB Jumpstart session begins on March 6, 2018, and ends on August 9, 2018 (excluding NYC DOE spring recess week, April 2 – 6, 2018, and July 4, 2018). The program is conducted in two sections, and students must be available for both in order to participate.

How much lab time can I expect to put in per day/week?

Students are expected to attend all spring after-school sessions from 4:30pm to 7:00pm, which take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays, starting March 6, 2018 and ending June 21, 2018 (excluding NYC DOE spring recess week, April 2 – 6, 2018). The spring after-school session is a total of 5 hours per weeks for 14 weeks. This is followed by participation in the summer full-time immersive research experience, taking place on campus M-F, June 25 through August 9, 2018.

How much does the program cost?

There is no cost to participate in this program and students receive stipends for full participation.

Is transportation assistance available?

Yes, all students who are accepted into LAB Jumpstart will receive monthly metrocards for the duration of the program.

Are stipends available?

Yes, students participating in LAB Jumpstart are eligible to receive a $250 stipend for the spring sessions and another $2000 for the summer experience.

Can I apply to the program if I live outside of New York City?

No. LAB Jumpstart is specific to students who live and attend school in New York City.

When will I find out whether or not I’ve been accepted to the LAB Jumpstart?

Decisions for LAB Jumpstart will be made by early February. Notifications will be communicated through email.

If I am accepted into LAB Jumpstart, am I eligible to participate in the Summer Science Research Program (SSRP)?

Yes. All students who are accepted into LAB Jumpstart will be eligible to participate in the SSRP. This participation in contingent upon successful participation in LAB Jumpstart. “Successful participation” means that students must demonstrate a positive work ethic, good laboratory practice, and respect for their work, instructors, and fellow students.

Are there any minimum GPA or curriculum requirements?

No, but we seek students who are committed to this program and have strong recommendations from their teachers/community leaders.

Can I submit my LAB Jumpstart research findings/poster/research report to a science fair that is not affiliated with The Rockefeller University?

Any scientific work you complete is the property of The Rockefeller University. Using this information for the purposes of participation in science fairs is at the discretion of RockEdu Science Outreach and your research mentors. Therefore, consent must be given in order to use this work.
