Dr. Messal's research explores the role of tissue architecture in early tumor suppression and initiation. By leveraging human organ tissue-clearing and long-term intravital microscopy technologies, Dr. Messal investigates the interactions between mutant cells and their surrounding tissue environment, aiming to identify key bottlenecks in tumor progression. His findings reveal that intact tissue compartmentalization restricts mutant cell expansion, preventing tumor initiation, while disruptions caused by tissue damage or physiological remodeling erode these defenses, enabling lesion formation. Dr. Messal will present insights into the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying these processes, including the influence of epithelial geometry on clonal transformation.
