Language is a complex behavior that involves many components and is thought by some to be unique to humans. However, the last several decades have seen a surge in non-human animal studies that inform us about language. Dr. Jarvis will present a modern synthesis of these studies, covering molecular, neural circuit, and behavioral levels. A key new concept is that components making up language are continuous among species, and therefore can be used to gain insight into mechanisms and evolution of language.

Dr. Jarvis received his Ph.D. from The Rockefeller University in 1995 under Dr. Fernando Nottebohm. In 1998, after completing postdoctoral work at Rockefeller, he joined Duke University as assistant professor, where he launched his own laboratory devoted to research on vocal learning in several types of birds, including songbirds, parrots, and hummingbirds. Dr. Jarvis was promoted to associate professor in 2005 and to professor in 2016. He was named a Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator in 2008. Dr. Jarvis returned to Rockefeller in 2016 to become a professor and head of the Laboratory of Neurogenetics of Language. His honors include the National Science Foundation Alan T. Waterman Award, the National Institutes of Health Director’s Pioneer Award, the Ruth and A. Morris Williams Faculty Research Prize at Duke University, and the Ernest Everett Just Award from the American Society for Cell Biology.
