The Admissions Process

Thank you for your interest in the Rockefeller University Child and Family Center (CFC). The following is information to help you with the admissions process.

The process begins when we receive an application from you. All applications received are classified by age which is why we always ask for both your child’s name and birth date whenever you have questions for us.

Application for Admission

In February, we host two evening Open Houses at the CFC for families of infants, one year olds and two year olds. The purpose of the Open House is to share information about the CFC and the admission process. The directors of the program will do a presentation designed to answer many questions about the philosophy of the CFC, a typical day at the CFC, and the challenges and rewards of group care for young children. After that, you will have the opportunity to see one infant room and two toddler rooms.

In March, we send out the acceptance and waitlist letters. You have two weeks after the individual tour to decide if you wish to accept the space.

We have found in the past that not all parents accept the spaces offered to them. When a space is turned down, we go immediately to the waitlist and call the next family on the list whose child is in the same age group. Because of the nature of the work at Rockefeller and the fact that families may leave after accepting a space, we have found that many more families are accepted off of the waitlist after March.

All acceptances (excluding the following three exceptions) to the CFC are on a first-come, first-served plan based solely on the date that is stamped on the application when it is received in the Human Resources office. The exceptions: children of lab heads and siblings of currently enrolled children are given a priority. We also occasionally have to make a choice based on gender. For example, if we have 10 girls in a preschool or toddler group, we may skip the next girl so that we can put a boy in the group.

Infants must be three months old by September (with the exception of lab head infants) in order to be eligible for a space.
