Interview with Paul Greengard, Ph.D.

In this interview, Paul Greengard talks about his childhood, his time in the Navy, his years in graduate school and early interest in understanding the biochemical basis of nerve cell function, and his postdoc years, which were primarily in England.

Greengard recounts how he came to the idea that postsynaptic physiological responses to neurotransmitters could be explained on a biochemical basis. He tells the story of winning the Nobel Prize for Medicine or Physiology in 2000 and the story of founding the Pearl Meister Greengard Prize in honor of his mother, who died giving birth to him.

This short film is excerpted from the oral history interview conducted with Paul Greengard on December 8 and 9, 2016.
