The CBSRC allows independent use of its equipment by those qualified, as well as extensive training and familiarization for those less-experienced in spectroscopic methods. Usage and training are by arrangement with the center's manager, Yufeng Wei, Ph.D.
In addition to instrumentation, the center also offers such practical amenities as a cold
room, research benches and a small reference library.
NMR Training
1D Proton NMR on Bruker DPX400: a demo session will be held periodically every month. People who are interested in an introductorysession in running NMR experiments can sign up in advance with the Facility Manager. A person can also be trained by an existing NMR user for this session. All new users must complete a 'check out' procedure with the Facility Manager, Yufeng Wei, before he or she can operate the spectrometer on their own.
Included in this session: login/logout, starting and exiting Xwinnmr, locking, shimming, data acquition, data processing, referencing, pick picking, integration, and plotting.
Carbon and heteronuclear NMR on Bruker DPX400: a demo session will be scheduled upon request. All users interested in running 13C, 15N, 31P experiments should contact Yufeng Wei for a demo appointment.
Included in this session: probe tuning and matching, qualitative spectra, J(C-H) coupling measurement, DEPT experiments.
2D and advanced NMR on Bruker DPX400: All users interested in acquiring two-dimensional NMR data and other advanced experiments should contact Yufeng Wei for a demo appointment. This includes any user who will perform the following experiments: gradient NMR, water suppresion, two dimensional experiments (COSY, NOESY, HMQC, HSQC, HMBC).
A user guide for each training session will be distributed during the demo and is available on the web site (PDF format).
'Check out'
All new users should make arrangements with Yufeng Wei to watch him or her to take and process a spectrum. An individual can only operate the spectrometer after he or she has successfully completed the 'check out' procedure.
Check out includes the following:
- login/logout, starting and exiting Xwinnmr
- locking and shimmimg
- acquisition and processing
- referencing, peak picking, and integration
- plotting
13C/15N/31P must pass 'check out' for probe tuning/matching, and 1D heteronuclear experiments.
Advanced users must pass all previous 'check out', and get trained on the experiments they want to run.
User accounts and Disk space
Each user is given an individual account. Users must login to their own account to use the instrument. Do NOT use other user's account. If somebody forgets to logout, the next user should log the other person out, and login to his or her account before running any experiments. Data backup will be the responsibility of each individual user, however, the University-wide computer back-up system is employed on both NMR instruments. It is suggested that the data on the hard drive be backed up frequently. A DVD±RW drive is available for creation of individual back-ups. Any CD-R/W (700 MB) or DVD±R/W (4.4 GB) disks can be used in the drive. A USB flash drive can also be used on this instrument. Both NMR instruments receive secure shell FTP from campus IP addresses. Any software that support SFTP can be used (WinSCP3 for Windows, Fetch for Mac) to download the data to your personal computer.
