Our plans for the online journals are constantly expanding. Current features include: full searchability by author, issue, or any text in any article, including cross-journal seaching among HighWire journals; links to databases, bibliographic links to materials cited in our articles (including Medline and CrossRef links and links directly to articles in other HighWire journals); the option of viewing images significantly larger than the print version; and future tables of content up to six weeks in advance of publication; Content Awareness, which notifiesanyone who registers of the contents of a new issue, and of future tables of content. In short, our online journals are MUCH more than a printed page, these features will contribute to the potential of turning your personal computer into a virtual and personal library.
The online versions of our journals will precede the arrival of the print versions. That is, some articles go online as far as four weeks in advance of the print mail date, while others go online on the mailing date.
There are no current plans to discontinue the print version of any journal. For the future, we would like to think that a print version will be available, but technological developments and pricing factors will in large part control these kinds of decisions. After all, it is still possible to buy a new desk with an inkwell; it just has to be custom made and costs more.
