Luc Demortier, Ph.D.

Dr. Demortier and his colleagues in the Laboratory of Experimental High Energy Physics are members of two of the largest experimental high-energy physics collaborations in the world. The first, the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF), located at the Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory near Chicago, has been active for 20 years and has produced a large body of important physics results. The second operates the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) at CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research near Geneva, Switzerland. CMS began taking data in 2010 and is able to study elementary particles at a significantly shorter distance scale than CDF. Dr. Demortier’s research time is shared between these two experiments.
Dr. Demortier is also involved with a small group of physicists and statisticians who aim to develop robust statistical methods that can be applied to the complex new problems encountered in high-energy physics today. Given the enormous scale of current experiments, smart approaches are needed to detect the small effects by which new physics phenomena manifest themselves.
CAREER
Dr. Demortier received his Ph.D. in physics from Brandeis University in 1991, and he joined Rockefeller University as a research associate that year. He was appointed assistant professor in 1997 and promoted to associate professor in 2004. Dr. Demortier was a co-convener of the CDF physics group for top quark studies from 1998 to 1999, and chairman of the CDF Statistics Committee from 2005 to 2007. Since 2007, he has chaired the CMS Statistics Committee.
