Juana Zayas, Pianist
Ms. Zayas started playing the piano at a very early age under the guidance of her mother. At age seven, she gave her first solo recital with works by Beethoven, Händel, and Chopin. She graduated at age eleven from the Peyrellade Conservatory in Havana, performing the Schumann concerto. She then attended the National Conservatory of Music in Paris, taking First Prize in piano and chamber music. In the United States, she studied with Adèle Marcus, David Bar-Illan, and Josef Raieff. She won a medal with distinction at the International Competition in Geneva, Switzerland and third prize at the Latin-American Teresa Carreño competition in Caracas, Venezuela.
Ms. Zayas has performed throughout Europe, South America, and the United States. Her performances have been broadcast by National Public Radio and New Yorks WQXR, among others. She has appeared as soloist with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, the St. Cecilia Chamber Orchestra, the Lexington Philharmonic Orchestra, the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra, the Zeeuws Orchestra in The Netherlands, the Venezuela Symphony Orchestra, and the Berkshire, Albany, Schenectady, Rockland, San Diego, and Dallas Civic Symphony Orchestras.
In the summer of 1986, she made her Ravinia Festival debut with the Chelsea Chamber Ensemble, of which she was a member for four years. In 1998, she was invited by the prestigious Serate Musicali series to give a recital at the Conservatory of Music in Milan, Italy, where she is scheduled to play again the next two years. In July, she will open the 1999 Newport Music Festival with an all-Chopin recital.
Ms. Zayas has numerous recordings on compact discs by Music & Arts Programs of America and by Albany Records.
