American-born Susan von Reichenbach is esteemed for her versatile voice encompassing both soprano and mezzo-soprano repertoire. A masterful Lieder singer, she has given highly praised recitals in Vienna, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Istanbul, and New York's Lincoln Center. In opera she has performed both Ariadne and the Composer (Ariadne auf Naxos), Elisabeth (Tannhäuser), Senta (Der fliegende Holländer), Amneris (Aida) and her favorite role of Leonore (Fidelio) at the opera houses of Hamburg, Mexico City, Seattle, Miami, and Pittsburgh, as well as the title role of Cherubini's Medée with L'Opera Francais de New York conducted by Yves Abel.
Ms. von Reichenbach has been guest soloist with the symphonies of San Francisco, Detroit, Milwaukee, New Mexico, San Antonio, Chautauqua, and Syracuse, the Stockholm Philharmonic and Orchestre National de France under Marek Janowski. Her 1995-96 season includes Leonore in Fidelio with the Cincinnati Symphony under Jesus Lopez-Cobos; Berlioz' La Damnation de Faust with the Utah Symphony; her first-ever Venus in Savonlinna (Finland) Opera Festival's new Tannhäuser, Verdi Requiem with the Orchestre Symphonique de Québec; and recitels in New York, Detroit, Santa Barbara and Washington, D.C. Future seasons include both the Beethoven Ninth Symphony and Mendelssohn's Elijah with the Saint Louis Symphony under Hans Vonk (the former P.B.S. telecast) and her Opéra de Monte Carlo debut, as Brangäne in Tristan und Isolde.
Douglas Martin has developed a reputation as one of the most respected coach accompanist/conductors in New York City, having worked with many outstanding operatic organizations in the U.S., Mexico, and Europe. He has just been asked to return to the National Opera Company of Mexico, in Mexico City, to prepare and conduct rehearsals of Wagner's Tristan und Isolde, where he has also prepared innovative productions of Cosi fan tutte, Le Nozze di Figaro, and Ariadne auf Naxos.
In 1993 Mr. Martin traveled to Arkansas to conduct The Merry Widow by Franz Lehar at the Inspiration Point Fine Arts Colony in Eureka Springs, Arkansas; and Britten's Albert Herring at the 1992 Adirondack Vocal Arts Retreat, an organization founded by Mr. Martin.
Douglas Martin's association with the Virginia Opera began in 1989 when he conducted six tour performances of Il Barbiere di Siviglia. A Washington Post reviewer noted the production as being "a cut above the rest... Douglas Martin, a young conductor making his debut paced the singers well."
For five summer seasons Mr. Martin was a member of the music staff of the Santa Fe Opera, and has been associated with the Wexford Festival in Wexford, Ireland; Festa Pro Musica in Assisi, Italy; the Berkshire Opera; the Merola Program of the San Francisco Opera; the American Opera Center at the Juilliard School; and the Indiana University Opera Theater at Indiana University, Bloomington, where Mr. Martin received a M.M. in Piano Performance.
