VAN CLIBURN FOUNDATION

The Foundation is a chartered, non-profit organization formed to sponsor the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition. This Competition, widely considered to be "the most prestigious classical piano competition in the world" (Chicago Tribune, Feb. 1996) was created by a group of Fort Worth music teachers and other volunteers in celebration of Van Cliburn's sensational victory at the first International Tchaikovsky Competition in 1958. Since the first gold medal was awarded in 1962, the Van Cliburn Competition continues, every four years, to identify outstanding young artists and open doors for them by providing two years of concert management services and hundreds of engagements around the world. These winners bring the highest quality of music and musicianship to audiences everywhere.

The Foundation is not only committed to developing artists but also to cultivating a knowledgeable audience in the North Texas area. Since 1976, Cliburn Concerts has presented a combination of rising young stars and established musical virtuosos in an annual concert series. Premiere pianists, instrumentalists, and chamber groups have been presented as well as past laureates of the Van Cliburn Competition and other talented young artists, many of whom have emerged from major international competitions. The Van Cliburn Foundation further demonstrates its commitment to education by offering lectures and demonstrations to the public, and participating in educational and outreach projects which include Adopt-A-School and Imagination Celebration. The International Association is a membership program for people around the world who share a love of classical music and support the efforts of the Foundation which recognizes the world's most talented young pianists and encourages an appreciation for their work.

Support and sponsorship from major American corporations has enabled the Van Cliburn Foundation to produce award-winning documentaries on the competitions which have been aired nationally on public television and syndicated on five continents. National and international radio series have been produced by major networks, and world-renowned labels have recorded the winners' performances.

INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION FOR OUTSTANDING AMATEURSª

This competition is open to doctors, scientists, board members, politicians, homemakers, and anyone else for whom making music is more than an avocation but less than an occupation. All competitors will be considered amateurs in the best sense of that word--not as those who "dabble," but as those who have engaged in the study of music as a serious pastime rather than as a professionÑsometimes having had to make the difficult choice between their profession and their potential career as a concert artist.

VAN CLIBURN INTERNATIONAL PIANO COMPETITION

Every four years, the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition brings together approximately thirty-five young musicians from around the world to celebrate their gifts and compete for a wide variety of prizes, including generous cash awards and numerous concert engagements. The competition is a rigorous and comprehensive examination of every facet of each contestant's musicianship and technical proficiency. All competitors are heard in recital; twelve semi-finalists play commissioned works and performances of chamber music; and six finalists perform two concerti with the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra and the Fort Worth Chamber Orchestra under the direction of a major international conductor. It is the task of the distinguished jury to ultimately select the Gold, Silver and Bronze medallists. The Tenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition will be held May 23 - June 8, 1997 in Fort Worth, Texas.
