A Cautionary Note on Science Fairs

Our goal is to provide top quality mentored research that follows its own path and clock. Science fairs also have demands and deadlines. STRAW keeps students on schedule for research reports and posters that could be entered in science fairs. Check these sites NOW and plan ahead with your mentors and teachers. Every year 10% of our students become semifinalists in prestigious science fairs.

Although the Program supports students working with their mentors, it is expected that they will collaborate with their mentors to write the report and respect issues of confidentiality and rigor. If the work will be entered in a science competition or submitted for publication in a scientific journal, then the full paper should also be submitted to the Director when the lab head feels that it is ready.

It is the student's responsibility to be forthcoming at the time of the initial interview and inform their potential mentor about plans to enter a science fair. The student is also responsible for notifying their mentor at the earliest possible time about any deadlines or responsibilities connected with science fairs. Here are links for the major NY, national, and international science fairs.
