Document Delivery / Interlibrary Loan

The Rockefeller University Library offers to all members of the Rockefeller University research community a Document Delivery / Interlibrary Loan service which provides books and / or photocopies of journal articles not available at the Rockefeller University Library or its affiliated libraries.

Self-Serve Electronic Document Delivery Service enables you to directly initiate article requests. It will serve primarily to supplement the RUL Interlibrary Loan Service in delivering journal articles when there is an immediate need for an article outside of regular library staffed hours.

Requests may only be made for items that directly support the research or administrative needs of the university.

This service is governed by conditions set by the National Interlibrary Loan Code, the Copyright Law of the United States (Title 17, U.S. Code), network and local agreements, and the policies of individual libraries.

Before submitting any request please check the Rockefeller University Library / Tri-Institutional Library Catalog, Tri-Cat, and the Electronic Journals page to make sure the items are not available.

SUBMITTING REQUESTS

Rockefeller University patrons may send Interlibrary Loan requests via:

Interlibrary Loan requests may be sent via: e-mail to librequest, fax to ext. 7840, or you may make requests in person at the Information Services Office on Floor 1 of Welch Hall between 9:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M. Monday to Friday.

For more information contact: Alisa Jackson at ext: 8916.

TIME REQUIRED

  • Requests are processed and sent out within 24 hours. However, actual receipt may depend on the response time of the lending library, type of material requested, and mode of transmission.
  • Urgent 'rush' requests may often be filled within hours by fax. However costs are often involved (see below).
  • To avoid delay, as much information as possible should be supplied.

COST

  • Cost will depend on the charge made to the Rockefeller University Library by the lending library. In most cases no charge is made because of RUL's consortium participation. When the lending library is not a participating member charges levied by that library will be passed on to the patron.
  • If the item is a rush, the charge for this usually begins at about $12.
  • An account number must be supplied for all requests.

NOTIFICATION

  • When a requested item arrives, patrons are notified by interoffice mail, e-mail or telephone.
  • When the original material is sent in lieu of a photocopy, the loan period is indicated on the white wrapper and you will also be informed of the loan period when you pick the item up.

LOAN PERIOD, RETURN AND RENEWALS

  • The loan period is determined by the lending library and is usually two weeks.
  • Please adhere to the date indicated on the white wrapper.
  • Some libraries renew interlibrary loans and some will not.
All items borrowed through the Interlibrary Loan service must be returned to the Information Services Office by the date indicated on the white wrapper. Returning materials after the due date will jeopardize RUL's borrowing privileges.
