Schematic View of Protein Sidechain Intercalation into DNA (Science 271:778 (1996))

The molecular surface of the DNA is shown in greyscale, the hydrophobic sidechains making up the wedge are shown in red and the electrostatic anchoring of the wedge to the DNA backbone or bases is shown in yellow. To the right in each case is an illustration of each wedge, the leading edge of which is the amino acid that partially inserts between consecutive basepairs.
