New Social Security Application Procedures for Aliens in Effect

On September 1, 2002, the Social Security Administration (SSA) implemented two significant changes in the processing of applications for social security numbers submitted by alien applicants. SSA will begin by (1) performing online preprocessing immigration document/status verification checks on all aliens through the "SAVE" (Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements) Program; and (2) an additional verification of full-time school attendance and eligibility for on-campus work authorization.

THERE IS NO LEGAL REQUIREMENT THAT AN INDIVIDUAL HAVE A SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER IN ORDER TO BE EMPLOYED.
