This morning, two members of the Local 78 union were outside the university's 66th Street gate, handing out flyers containing incorrect information about the university's removal of asbestos from the roof of LARC.
The following are the facts:
Rockefeller University requires that all construction management companies that work on the campus use union employees. CAC Certified was hired by Nicholson and Galloway roofing company, a subcontractor of Turner Construction, with which Rockefeller University has its contract. The union claims that CAC Certified, the company responsible for the asbestos removal, is using non-union employees.
This morning Rockefeller University contacted officials of Turner and informed the company that until our questions about whether CAC's employees are unionized are answered, no further work can be done by CAC on this campus.
We do know that the asbestos removal, part of repair of the LARC roof, is being conducted in accordance with city, state and federal regulations to insure our safety. Rockefeller University has hired an independent company to perform appropriate air monitoring of the LARC roof and the surrounding area. Daily analysis of the air samples show that levels of asbestos are below established safety limits. That is, the tests have revealed no problems.
The asbestos removal occurs at night in order not to block daytime entry and exit of delivery trucks at the 64th Street entrance to the campus.
