About the University

Tom Sakmar and StudentThe Rockefeller University is a world-renowned center for research and graduate education in the biomedical sciences. Founded in 1901 as the Rockefeller Institute for Medical Research, the University provides a uniquely stimulating and collaborative environment for scientists working in its 69 independent laboratories. Patient-oriented studies are conducted in The Rockefeller University Hospital, the nation's only private medical facility devoted entirely to clinical research.

The University's graduate program offers an innovative educational experience for some of the nation's most exceptional graduate students in fields such as molecular and cell biology, genetics, immunology, neuroscience, structural biology, biophysics and biochemistry. Rockefeller is also a leader in developing training programs in emerging disciplines such as computational biology and genomics.

Since its earliest days, Rockefeller has been known for scientific achievement. Many of the 20th century's key scientific breakthroughs occurred in its laboratories, and over the years twenty-three of its scientists have received Nobel prizes. Currently Rockefeller investigators focus on almost every major disease and health problem confronting society today.
