Obituaries:
Henry N. Wood, emeritus associate professor, died on July 24, 2004 at
his home in Harper’s Ferry, West Virginia. He was 79. Wood
served in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1946, before beginning
undergraduate work at Wagner College in New York City. He came to
Rockefeller in 1955, the year he completed his Ph.D. at Purdue
University. From 1959 to 1982 Wood did research on plant tumors in
the laboratory of Armin C. Braun. In 1982 he was granted tenure and
became head of a new Laboratory of Plant Biochemistry, where he
continued studies of the crown gall tumor disease in plants to
understand the substances and mechanisms involved in regulating
cell growth. Among other achievements, he discovered a class of
regulators in higher plants, and isolated six
cell-division-promoting factors from crown gall tumor cells. Wood
became emeritus professor in 1990. He was a member of the American
Society of Biological Chemists and The Harvey Society.

Contributions to the History of The Rockefeller University, edited by Darwin H. Stapleton, by The Rockefeller University Press. A collection of
articles by 15 authors based on research in the university’s
archives, this volume is the result of a conference held at
Rockefeller in November 2000 in celebration of the
university’s centennial. Stapleton is executive director of
the Rockefeller Archive Center.
Named:
Paul Greengard and Charlie Rice, fellows of the American Association for the
Advancement of Science, the world’s largest general
scientific society. Greengard is head of the Laboratory of
Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience; Rice is head of the Laboratory
of Virology and Infectious Disease.
Awarded:
C. Erec Stebbins, the 2004 Interscience Conference on Antimicrobial
Agency and Chemotherapy Young Investigator Award, which recognizes
early career scientists for research
excellence and potential in microbiology and
infectious diseases. Stebbins was honored for his work in
biochemistry and structural biology that has made contributions to
our knowledge of the key virulence factors of some of the most
dangerous pathogens. Stebbins, head of the Laboratory of Structural
Microbiology, was nominated by Vincent Fischetti.
Ralph Steinman, the 2004 Mayor’s Award for Science and Technology
for biological and medical sciences; and John McKinney,
the Mayor’s “Young Investigator” Award for
Science and Technology. The awards, which are administered by
the New York Academy of Sciences, were presented October 13.
Steinman is head of the Laboratory of Cellular Physiology and
Immunology; McKinney is head of the Laboratory of Infection
Biology.
