Green Tip of the Month: Conserve Paper
Purchase recycled copy paper with a high percentage of recycled content, preferably post-consumer. Even better is PCF (process chlorine free) paper, which is made from recycled pulp not bleached with chlorine, a major pollutant. Recycled paper causes 35% less water pollution and 74% less air pollution than paper manufactured from virgin pulp. Rockefeller's Storeroom offers many items made from recycled materials, including copy paper, notepads, notebooks, file folders and Jiffy mailers.
Reduce paper usage by printing documents double-sided and avoiding the use of a fax cover sheet. Use the blank sides of misprints to create notepaper of various sizes. When shipping packages, use paper from a shredder as packing material.
Rockefeller paper recycling bins accept loose paper (even with staples and paper clips... though paper clips should be reused), envelopes, newspapers, magazines, catalogs, file folders (any color), shredded paper, paperback books, paper bags, cardboard and even Post-it Notes! The recycling process must begin with dry paper, so do not discard any damp or wet paper in the bins because it renders an entire batch useless and sends it to a landfill! Paper recycling reduces greenhouse gas emissions, extends the fiber supply, saves considerable landfill space and reduces energy and water consumption.
